This was my final project for the Pixar Undergraduate Program. I chose to try cloth tailoring and simulation because I had never done it before, and I've always had an interest in physics and fashion.
I replicated the dress by Kenzo Takada and fitted it on Andy's Mom from Toy Story 3. There are three simulated garments: The dress, the shirt, and the boots. I liked this outfit because it offered the opportunity to try many different tailoring techniques - the gathering in the sleeves and boots, the buttons, the collar, and the different materials on the dress.
Getting the right movement of the quilted dress was a particular challenge because I was not too familiar with that material, and I did not have a video of this dress in motion. I ended up looking at videos on youtube of Takada's other runway shows for reference.
Even though it is hard to read what the different materials are without shading, I hope that the movement feels right! I have to say, Andy's Mom looks pretty fierce right now, even though she's probably going through some kind of mid-life crisis!
I had a great time with this project and I plan to keep learning about cloth simulation!
